Jacksonville defense attorney Randy Reep thought he’d come up with the perfect idea to reach clients in need and give a boost to law enforcement at the same time. However, his proposal to put advertising in the back seats of patrol cars, or on the trunks or fenders for that matter, isn’t something that the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will consider. Police cars are part of an officer’s uniform and not for commercial sale, according to Lauri-Ellen Smith, the special assistant to Sheriff John Rutherford. Rolling billboards are nothing new, in Jacksonville or elsewhere. Jacksonville city buses are emblazoned with ads, including those for lawyers. Reep said he doesn’t see any difference between buses and cruisers. Other cities have, or have proposed, doing the same with police cars as a way to cut expenses and pay for equipment.
