wo organizations that advocate for workers’ rights have asked the U.S. Department of Labor to investigate their claim that Florida has created a system that blocks qualified workers from receiving unemployment benefits when they lose their jobs.
The department says it’s looking into the allegations.
The newly created Florida Department of Economic Opportunity denies it is doing anything wrong.
But the allegations by the National Employment Law Project and Florida Legal Services present a strong case.
They note that Florida used to let jobless Floridians apply for benefits by phone – which is the most common procedure in most states. Now people have to apply online. That can be hard for people without a computer, computer skills and Internet access. (Read Full Article Here)
