The editorial states: “The most important election in Florida may take place far down the ballot and involve people unfamiliar to most voters. But a vital principle will be at stake. The candidates are Fred Lewis, Barbara Pariente and Peggy Quince, all justices of the Florida Supreme Court. They don’t have opponents. Under Florida’s merit retention system, justices face a yes-no referendum when their six-year terms expire. The system is not designed to remove justices just because voters disagree with a ruling or two. It is designed to remove justices who are ignoring the law or are incompetent.
