Showman P.T. Barnum is often hailed as the creator of the modern circus. But his partner, James Anthony Bailey, was the true visionary. Bailey, an orphan who grew up in the circus, believed that stripping the act of its vulgarity could create a more popular attraction. At age 25, he started managing the nation's first family-friendly big top, the Cooper and Bailey Circus.
