Local Attorneys You Can Trust
Cocoa is the mainland city on the Indian River, a causeway ride from the beach town that shares its name. Its heart is Historic Cocoa Village, a walkable riverfront downtown that has been a Florida Main Street community since 1995 and was named the state's Main Street Program of the Month in 2026. The village sits beside roughly ten acres of public riverfront parkland, and the oldest and largest campus of Eastern Florida State College is here too.
Our Cocoa personal injury lawyers live and work in the communities we serve. Unlike big box firms with headquarters in other states and attorneys that focus on closing as many cases as possible, our lawyers give your case the personal attention it deserves and fight for you like you're our neighbor, because you are. We understand the specific risks boaters face on the Indian River, the traffic accident hotspots along N. Cocoa Blvd., and the challenges posed by out-of-state tourists exploring unfamiliar areas while visiting our city on vacation. This local knowledge gives us insight into your case that other firms can't match.

Meet Our Lead Attorney
"After a wreck on N. Cocoa Boulevard or King Street, most families hesitate to call a lawyer. Nobody wants to make things bigger than they are. Here's what I want Cocoa to know: Florida usually gives you just two years, and waiting is the one mistake I can't undo. Call early; it costs nothing, and I'd rather tell you that you don't need me than watch a good case expire."
Riley Beam, Lead Attorney (Florida Bar #100512)
Riley won a historic $28.5 million verdict in his first trial. He brings the same tenacity and legal acumen to every personal injury case he takes on in Cocoa and throughout Brevard County.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to questions about personal injury cases in Cocoa, FL
I was hurt in Cocoa. Is that the same as Cocoa Beach?
No. Cocoa is the mainland city on the Indian River; Cocoa Beach is a separate barrier-island city, connected by the SR 520 causeway across Merritt Island. They have different police departments and different records. Even big websites mix them up, so when you search for help, make sure the lawyer actually knows which city your crash happened in. It changes who wrote the report and where the evidence lives. (And Historic Cocoa Village is downtown Cocoa, not Cocoa Beach.)
Where's the nearest emergency room now that Rockledge Hospital is gone?
This changed recently and it matters. Orlando Health's Rockledge Hospital closed permanently in April 2025 after 84 years. Today the closest ERs to Cocoa are Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, Health First's Viera Hospital, Orlando Health Melbourne, and Parrish Medical Center in Titusville, and a new Cape Canaveral Hospital is under construction on Merritt Island, opening in 2027. Wherever the ambulance took you, your records follow, and we collect them from every facility.
Is it worth hiring a lawyer for a Cocoa crash?
If you were treated by a doctor for real injuries, usually yes, and finding out is free. The insurer's adjusters handle claims all day; you don't. A lawyer documents treatment, finds every coverage layer, deals with the recorded-statement traps, and protects your deadlines. When you call, our intake team tells you on the phone whether this is something we can help with. When there's potential, you meet an attorney who gives you an honest answer about your case. And if what you have is a minor property-damage claim, we tell you that honestly and you leave the conversation better informed.
How long do I have to act?
For most Florida crash and injury claims caused by someone else's carelessness, you generally have two years from the date of the crash to file a lawsuit. Florida shortened that deadline from four years to two, and the change applies to crashes after March 24, 2023. If your crash happened on or before that date, the older four-year deadline may still apply, which means some 2022 and early 2023 crashes are still within the window today. Deadlines also work differently for claims against a city, county, or state agency, which require written notice to the agency before any lawsuit, and for wrongful death and defective product claims. Do not assume a child's claim gets extra time, because in most Florida injury cases it does not. Don't assume you're too late either. Call us and we'll check your date for free.
A second clock runs on your own insurance. Florida's no-fault law requires your first medical visit occur within 14 days of the crash to use your PIP benefits. Miss that window and your own insurance can deny the coverage you already pay for. PIP pays 80 percent of covered bills, up to $10,000 in combined medical and disability benefits when a qualified provider finds you had an emergency medical condition, and only up to $2,500 when no one makes that finding. With Cocoa's nearest ERs now spread across Cocoa Beach, Viera, Melbourne, and Titusville, a same-week urgent care visit is often the practical way to protect the PIP clock after a crash that didn't need an ambulance. Go get checked, even if you feel okay.
These timelines cover car crash and other injury claims based on someone's carelessness. Medical malpractice, wrongful death, claims against government agencies, and claims involving a defective product follow their own separate rules and deadlines. If your situation is one of those, call us and we'll tell you which deadline applies.
What does it cost to hire an injury lawyer in Cocoa?
The consultation costs nothing. Injury cases run on a contingency fee set in a written fee agreement under Florida Bar rules, and you owe no attorney fee unless we recover for you. Three things come out of any settlement before money reaches you: the attorney fee, case costs, and repayment of medical bills or liens, like hospital or health-insurance liens. At Douglas R. Beam, P.A. there is no attorney fee if no recovery. Clients can be responsible for costs if there is no recovery. The number that matters is your net, which is why lien reduction is real legal work; negotiating medical liens down often changes your net more than any other single step. Ask any lawyer you interview to walk through that math.
